The two Manchester clubs continued their Barclays Premier League campaigns today in the Manchester derby. This is one of the biggest derbies in the world and both managers were new to the big stage. There was a huge setback before the match for United as we were told by David Moyes that Robin Van Persie had a groin injury and was consiquently left out of the team.
It was clear within the first five minutes that the derby would be a hotly contested one as Nastasic was shown a yellow for a poor challenge on Chris Smalling. Smalling was then involved again with a bit of poor defending let Samir Nasri feed the ball through leaving Manchester United helpless as Sergio Aguero got on the end of Kolarov’s cross. After falling behind in sixteen minutes, many expected a comeback from United however this wasn’t what they got. City still dominated the match and Rio Ferdinand looked to be hopeless in defence. City doubled their lead in stoppage time of the first half as Nasri’s corner got flicked on by Negredo and turned in by an unmarked Yaya Tore. This once again showed a weakness in Man United’s defending.
Thinking that City would sit back now, I fully expected Man United to pile on a comeback and get a draw. Instead, Kolarov and Negredo linked up setting up Aguero for another excellent finish. It must however be said that Rio Ferdinand was once again at fault for the goal. Nasri completed the job by latching onto the end of a Jesus Navas cross with a brilliant volley. There was however one consolation goal by United’s man of the match Wayne Rooney. He scored a brilliant free kick making him the top scorer in manchester derbies overtaking Eric Cantona. Moyes later stated that Rooney didn’t deserve to be on the losing side and I totally agree as he was world class. For all of United’s mistakes, you musn’t take anything away from Manchester City who were absolutely brilliant throughout the whole match.
Man of the Match-Samir Nasri
Goals-Aguero (16), (47) Toure (45+) Nasri (50)
A quick note on the other matches: Arsenal looked a bit off the pace and quite tired following their champions league midweek match. They did however manage a 3-1 victory over Stoke to take them to the top of the table. Swansea were excellent and overcame an energetic Crystal Palace to win 2-0, taking them to ninth in the table. Tottenham once again had a good performance but they just can’t seem to score and scraped a 1-0 win over Cardiff with an injury time backheel from Paulinho.
