Today seemed like a routine day in the Premier League, with the two Manchester clubs presented with what appeared to be ‘easy’ fixtures. Man U had a home fixture against West Brom and with the strength and depth of the club, they should have comfortably taken the 3 points. Furthermore, City had a game against 13th placed Aston Villa and you wouldn’t have been blamed for putting money on Pellegrini’s side to come out on top.
However things were way more different than expected. Man Utd ended up going home with no points at all after losing 2-1 courtesy of goals from Amalfitano and Berahino. The Red Devils now sit in 12th place, but this could worsen by the end of the weekend. West Brom on the other hand, have moved up to mid-table and are placed in 10th.
But the game which i think was the most enthralling of today had to be Villa vs Man City. It surpassed any other game today in drama, goals and surprises but also was a great display of football.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side had taken just one point from a possible six prior to travelling to Villa but a first away win looked promising for the visitors as they dominated early on.
The home side’s 3-5-2 formation was leaving them defensively fragile on the flanks and City repeatedly found spaces, with James Milner shooting wide while Samir Nasri’s deflected shot flew just wide of the upright.
Villa couldn’t create many chances and Joe Hart had very little to do. The closest they came to scoring was when a freekick by El Ahmadi narrowly sailed over the bar.
City on the other hand, were not to be kept out any longer and on the brink of half time Yaya Toure latched onto a volley after Nasri’s cross had been headed away from goal.
5 minutes after the break Villa were level. Bacuna, 22, slipped a smart ball to send El Ahmadi clear and though the Morocco international appeared offside, the flag stayed down as he fired past Hart to equalise.
Edin Dzeko quickly quietened Villa’s celebrations as the tall Bosnian got on the end of Samir Nasri’s corner to put City back in front and move them on course for that first away win.
But Villa weren’t down and out yet. Captain Ron Vlaar volleyed into the hands of Hart from Vincent Kompany’s poor clearance before the hosts were presented an even better chance to equalise when they were awarded a 73rd minute free-kick 25 yards out. They took full advantage as Bacuna confidently stepped up to curl a sublime effort that gave Hart no chance.
2 minutes later, Weimann completed the comeback after Kompany and Matija Nastasic allowed Guzan’s delivery to bounce and, racing towards goal, he tapped the ball into the net to secure a memorable victory over the title contenders. This win brings Paul Lambert’s side up to 9th in the table and leaves Pellegrini wondering what will be made of his side’s performance today.
All in all, this game was fast-paced, lively and dramatic – All aspects of the Premier League. Also it leaves us wondering who will win the League this year. Arsenal are very good contenders and may be in with a chance of winning a trophy after a long long wait. Well actually, lets not get too ahead of ourselves here…
